Why did you choose sqzzy.com?
Well, I had already purchased the domain name as a second choice for another project of mine and was doing nothing with it. I figured, sqzzy could be pronounced several different ways, two of those that might be applicable to a dating site. (SEK ZEE) and (SKOO ZEE), like sexy and scuzy (like excuse me in italian... kinda). Sqzzy can also be pronounced (SKUH ZEE), like how I pronounce scsi (nerd term). Anyway, when I saw I had this domain and that it fit my needs, I went for it :D!
How do you pronounce Sqzzy?
I don't really care how you pronounce it. I chose it because the pronunciation is ambigious. Personally I say (SKEE ZEE), but I've heard (SEK ZEE), (SKOO ZEE), (SKUH ZEE), (SKIH ZEE) (SOK ZEE) and several others.
Isn't calling someone a nerd/geek/otaku offensive?
A word is only as offensive as the context in which it is said. I take pride in being a nerd and an otaku. Nerd and geek have recently been used in many positive contexts such as "nerd-chic", "nerdcore", "geek-rock", etc. It's not a bad thing, trust me ;P.
Why can't sqzzy be completely free?
Running a server costs money. There are plenty of parts of the site free members can access, but to give incentive to pay us so we can pay for hosting etc, we make some of the parts only accessible by paying members.
Can you tell me about the innards?
Sure thing! I'm a linux and open source kind of guy, and I was REALLY busy when I wanted to start sqzzy. So I looked for an open source dating site and found osdate. It's licensed in the LGPL and written in PHP and uses the smarty templating system and MySQL, so I could easily hack it to my needs. Our server is currently just a shared host :[ Though when I do have enough funds for a dedicated server, I'll be running either debian linux or OpenBSD. At home I run Ubuntu linux, though I've been a long time user of OpenBSD, Debian, Slackware and OpenSuSE.
So you hacked osdate?
Yeah, first off I tried to get rid of all the unnecessary tables in the templates. I've also tweaked a few things here and there. I'm still looking at how I can make it fit the site better, run faster, etc.
I've got this really great suggestion...
That's great! I'd love to hear it! Just scroll down to the bottom of the page and use the feedback form or send an email to adminPsqzzy.com Just replace that P with an at symbol.
There's not a lot of members near me! D:
Sorry, we are fairly new to this and all. If there's no one near you, maybe you should post this site up in your local craigslist and then check back later. If that fails, put up some flyers letting people near you know about it. If THAT fails, you might want to consider moving.
I have some more questions for you...
Well chances are, if they are intelligible and haven't been covered already, I'll answer them. Just scroll down to the bottom of the page and use the feedback form or send an email to adminPsqzzy.com Just replace that P with an at symbol.
Site feature FAQs below
How do I change my email address or password?
You can change your email address on the "edit your profile" page. Here you can change some other information including search preferences, address and other preferences about your daily routines, habits, hobbies etc.
After you've made your changes, click "Save" at the bottom of the page to save.
What is the purpose behind Instant Messenger, how do i get benefit from it?
This application is a faster way of communicating to other members of the site who are online. Its lists all the members who are online. When you send message, recipient will receive message and would reply. If unfortunately recipient doesn't receive message for some reason, then that message will be send to his onsite message Inbox.
How does "My Matches" works?
My Matches works according to the basic profile and "search preferences" at the bottom of the "edit profile" page.
Do people actually meet on your site? Do they ever get married?
To tell the truth, we just started, so the answer is not that I know of. As soon as I hear about a successful meetup (or a failed on :[ ) I'll change this.
When someone emails me, where does the email go and how do I respond?
When a member sends you a note, it goes straight into your onsite message Inbox. We then send an email to your personal email address to let you know that it's there.
To read the note, simply login to the site and go to your Inbox. If you decide to write back, simply click "reply", write your own note and send away. Your note will go straight into the member's onsite Inbox, and we'll let them know it's there with an email to their personal email address.
All communications with other members stay onsite so that you never have to give out any personal information until you feel completely ready. Then when you are, you can exchange phone numbers and even meet in person.
How do I edit my profile? How do I hide my profile?
To update your profile, click "Edit Profile" in Members Panel menu. Be sure to save your changes at the bottom of the screen when you're done.
Try to put your best foot forward with at least one photo and snappy, detailed essays about your interests. The photo is key since most people feel more comfortable writing to members they can see. Try to stay positive in your essays and let the real you shine.
To hide your profile, select "No" for the option "Other members can see when I'm online?" on the "Edit Profile" page . Keep in mind, however, that members who are most active on the site keep their profile visible in all places because it ups their chances of connecting with people. And you never know, someone special may be looking for you and never get to find you if your profile is hidden.
When I suspend my membership, does it end my subscription? Can I put my subscription on hold?
No. Once you purchase a subscription, it will remain active for the remainder of your initial term.
